Tomo CampbellBiography
Tomo Campbell’s expressive large-scale oil paintings contain hidden shapes and characters that elicit double takes. Campbell’s abstracted scenes hide familiar motifs lifted from Neoclassical and Flemish art and painted in a soft pastel color palette reminiscent of Rococo. In his vibrant diptych The Hunt (2016), men on horseback ride across fields of bright, multicolored paint with their hounds in pursuit of a unicorn. Campbell’s forms are fluid and suggestive, blending in with the layers of textured brushstrokes to form images that oscillate between figuration and abstraction. A darling of London’s creative scene, Campbell’s sprawling works have been purchased by celebrities such as Mario Testino, Alexa Chung, and Harry Styles. In 2012, he was selected as the first artist in residence at the English National Ballet. Campbell’s works have been exhibited internationally in Melbourne, Edinburgh, and the U.S.
